Chaps were designed in Hawaii over 50 years ago by
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Ikeda in their factory in the town of Paia here on the Island of Maui
They designed the original chaps for use in the Pineapple fields.
These chaps are similar in style to the paniolo's leather chaps, except they are made out of a durable canvas.
The Plantation workers needed something strong to protect their legs from the sharp points of the pineapple plant and the rough terrain of the fields while harvesting the crops.
They are still used today by Pineapple workers.
Over the years people have also found different uses for them
In 1996
Mr. and Mrs. Ikeda retired and sold their chaps part of the factory to me.
I now specialize in
All cotton canvas chaps
and
Cotton/poly cotton Camouflage chaps
